Doug Sleeter Inducted into Accounting Hall of Fame

Doug Sleeter was inducted into the CPA Practice Advisor Accounting Hall of Fame, and two new members were welcomed as Top Accounting Thought Leaders on Monday, February 27, during a during a ceremony at the 9th annual Accounting Thought Leader Symposium in Indianapolis.

Sleeter was the founder and CEO of The Sleeter Group, an international network of accounting software consultants, and the former producer of SleeterCon, one of the most popular annual educational and tradeshow conferences for accounting professionals. He sold The Sleeter Group and SleeterCon in 2015, and they are now known as Accountex. A champion of innovation and positive disruption in small business accounting, Sleeter began his career with a CPA firm, then later joined Apple Computer, before starting and running The Sleeter Group with his wife Sherrill.

The new members of CPA Practice Advisor’s Top Thought Leaders are Ron Baker, a CPA and widely-known proponent of the value pricing model, and Kacee Johnson, a consultant and principal of Blue Ocean Principles.

“Doug Sleeter has changed the accounting profession, and the profession is a better place for his contributions in the area of accounting technology,” said Gail Perry, CPA, editor-in-chief of CPA Practice Advisor. “He has directly improved the relationships between thousands of small businesses and their accounting firms, helping the businesses operate more efficiently and better collaborate with their financial professionals.”

Always in search of the next big thing, he is currently focusing on digital currencies and blockchain technology. He believes these technologies will change virtually everything in global commerce.

Inductees for the Accounting Hall of Fame are selected by existing members. Sleeter joins Accounting Hall of Fame members Greg L. LaFollete, CPA, Randy Johnston, Gary Boomer, CPA, Rick Richardson, CPA, Chris Frederiksen, CPA, Tom Hood, CPA, and Allan Koltin, CPA.

“Doug has had an enormous influence in the accounting space, and we are excited that the Thought Leaders have chosen to add him to the Hall of Fame,” said Barry Strobel, publisher of CPA Practice Advisor.

Sleeter has been a member of CPA Practice Advisor’s Top Thought Leaders since the program’s founding in 2011, and is a frequent speaker at events across the country. He has been a frequent columnist in CPA Practice Advisor and other accounting publications. In 2013, he received the Small Business Influence Champion award from Small Business Trends. He was been included in Accounting Today’s Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting each year from 2008 through 2015. He has also served on several advisory boards for technology companies and has consulted with industry leaders including Intuit, Sage, Apple, and Adobe Systems

He has authored numerous books and course materials, including The QuickBooks Consultant’s Reference Guide, The QuickBooks Step-by-Step Teaching System, Adding a Xero to Your Practice, Restaurant Accounting with QuickBooks, and college textbooks such as QuickBooks Complete, QuickBooks Fundamentals and Intuit’s QuickBooks Fundamentals Learning Guide.

The Thought Leader Symposium brings together key influencers in the accounting profession for round table discussions with each other and with vendors factors that are shaping the profession and small businesses. The invited visionaries travel from as far as Australia to attend the event. The 2017 Symposium is sponsored by Intuit, ADP, Sage, Xero and Cetrom.

Sleeter attended the University of California Santa Cruz and Santa Clara University, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Information Systems. He and his family live in Pleasanton, CA.
